Chonmage Japanese Restaurant offers a cozy spot in downtown San Rafael for anyone craving authentic Japanese ramen and more. Tucked along Court Street, it balances a clean, inviting atmosphere with a genuine Japanese vibe that draws in locals and visitors alike. The interior is modest but spotless, creating a comfortable backdrop for a relaxed meal without fuss.

If you're stopping by after a hike or a day of exploring nearby trails, the ramen here provides a satisfying and warming experience. The menu features a range of thoughtfully crafted bowls like the spicy wagyu beef ramen and the more traditional Sasuke Tonkotsu, each delivering richness balanced with fresh ingredients. Beyond ramen, the selection of appetizers such as takoyaki and chicken kara-age add variety and shareable options, making it a good choice for groups or casual diners looking to sample different flavors.

Chonmage also accommodates those seeking lighter or vegetarian options, such as the ベジタブルラーメン (vegetable ramen) and rice balls (onigiri), which feel like well-portioned snacks or starters rather than mere sides. For dessert, the Taiyaki and mango sweet rice bring a sweet finish to the meal with straightforward, comforting sweetness rather than overly elaborate treats.

Service here leans toward friendly and attentive without being intrusive, with staff helping diners navigate the menu and creating a welcoming environment that some patrons note as a rare find in the Bay Area's Japanese restaurant scene. Outdoor seating is available if the weather is nice, offering a quiet spot with natural light and a good place to lock up a bike, adding to its appeal for locals passing through or stopping in on a sunny day.

This restaurant fits best into moments when you want a warm, filling meal that feels both authentic and approachable. It works well for solo diners grabbing a quick lunch (especially if you like tofu or miso flavors), small groups sharing ramen and appetizers, or anyone who appreciates a setting that keeps things simple but satisfying. Lunchtime or early dinner hours see a steady flow that benefits from natural daylight and a relaxed pace.

The food is amazing for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The service is amazing, it feels like I’m in Japan. The food is way better than food I can find in Japan town in SF!

Chonmage was a very nice surprise. My sister took me to this little gem in San Rafael because I was craving for Japanese cuisine that time. We went there to get a light lunch while touring San Francisco. We ordered some seasoned edamame for appetizers and it was 5/5, just lightly seasoned with a good crisp. We also ordered vegetable tempura which had a good serving size. They paired it with a good tempura sauce. We also shared Donburi with rice and that dish was really yummy. It was a great pairing with the tempura because that one had a good marinade which had a good umami flavor. The dish was very filling and was very tasty. Ambience - it was simple and clean and they have a clean restroom as well. Not too much background noise and totally good for catching up with friends and family. Service - all their wait staff was very friendly and accommodating to our questions. And we had a lot of questions. And the service was quite quick. The restaurant was maybe moderately busy when we came to visit. Overall, I really love the restaurant. I live in SoCal and I really wish we have something like this back home.I highly recommend it !

Because of an hour-plus train to wait for, I had my lunch here as opposed to going home. Just so happened, it was a pleasant gentle sunny day in September. The price is cheaper than fair. I had the tofu small bite. I enjoyed my outdoor seating by a decent fence for bike locking. That tofu was delicious. I have to ding a star for one has to ask for a menu in this typically menu-display location. I learned that from the time-consuming customer in front of me and for that customer’s order to be completed before I can place mine. It still is my new recommendation for a Downtown San Rafael biking lunch.

After hiking Dipsea Trail, we were looking for some comfort food to heal our aching body. lol This place hit the spot. We all ordered ramen- the spicy wagyu and the black garlic. All was delish! We also ordered some calamari and takoyaki for appetizers. Delish!!! We were so hungry the only pix I took was the spicy wagyu ramen!! If you are in the area, stop on by, you won’t be disappointed!

The staff here are just absolutely lovely and so friendly. They really made us feel so comfortable and welcome throughout our meal. The space itself is incredibly cozy and spotlessly clean, giving off a wonderful Japanese vibe. I was absolutely thrilled with my order – the spicy miso tonkotsu ramen was out of this world delicious! The richness, the perfect level of spice, it was all so incredibly satisfying, and the portion size was very generous. My friends all raved about their dishes too. We'll definitely be back again!

Absolutely amazing ramen! The broth was rich and full of umami, the noodles perfectly chewy, and the toppings fresh and flavorful—especially the melt-in-your-mouth chashu and creamy soft-boiled egg. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made the experience even better. Definitely a must-visit!

OMG yum!! I ordered the spicy miso tonkatsu and added corn and substituted the ramen for udon. I made the perfect choice This place blew my mind! Usually I go to San Francisco so my udon fix, but Chonmage exceeded my expectations, and gave me everything I wanted and then some! I always expect the ramen places to be mid tier, compared to some of the 5 star places I’ve been to. This place is my new go to ramen spot in Marin :) The broth was rich with umami and seasoned perfectly. The staff is so warm and friendly, and the chef even came out and said hi! I love this spot and will be here very often :)
